A Journal that fills itself in.
New
- The Journal. A third tab. Every day you logged an urge colours itself by how hard that day was, so the month is a picture before you write a word. Tap the month name to pull back to the whole year at once.
- Notes on any day. Write a line about what happened, and read back everything you wrote that month underneath the grid.
- Your plan. Decide what you will do before the urge arrives. Crest drafts it from what actually beats you, then puts it in front of you the moment one starts.
- Your toolkit. After a surf it asks one question, did anything help, and over time works out which tool actually works for you.
- Log a past urge without running a timer.
- Lock Screen widgets. A ring and a countdown, the phase and what is coming next, or a single line.
- The Live Activity keeps up. The phase on your Lock Screen now changes as the wave does, even with the phone in a pocket. At twenty-five minutes it says you rode it out, and then reminds you the surf is still waiting to be logged. Swipe it away whenever you like.
Improved
- The proof card says it in a sentence. It read "It passed 50 of the 50 you've rated", which asked you to notice two identical numbers and work out that they meant all of them - and called that number your surfs, when it only ever counted the ones you rated at both ends. It says what it counts now.
- And once you have rated twenty, it changes job. By then you know urges pass. So it starts answering the question that replaces it: how much further they are falling now than they used to.
- The wave is in the widget. The water rises through the climb, stands highest at the peak, and visibly drains as it passes, so a glance says whether the worst of it is behind you.
- One set of colours. Every intensity number now uses the same scale, calm blue through to coral. Four separate scales used to disagree with each other, so a 7 could be orange on one screen and green on the next. Your ratings are unchanged.
- The category colours are calmer, and the charts, the time-of-day grid and the streak flame now sit inside Crest's own palette instead of borrowing system colours.
- Outcomes have a hierarchy. "The urge passed" is the button; giving in and cancelling are text, and giving in is unadorned on purpose.
- The wave crossfades between phases instead of cutting.
Fixed before it shipped
- The Journal was blind to everything you had already written. Before there was a Journal there was still somewhere to write: a note on the surf, from the tool during it or from the log afterwards. The new tab read only its own notes, so somebody who had been writing in Crest for months would have opened it and found nothing of theirs. It reads both now. Those notes stay on the surf they belong to and are still edited there - they are simply also somewhere you can read them back.
- Settings that only worked one way. Turning the Live Activity, the countdown or notifications on or off during a surf applied to the next surf rather than the one running. All three act on the surf in front of you now.
- You could not correct how strong an urge was by the end. Every other number on a past surf could be edited; that one could not - and it is half of the fade. Mis-tap it once and it was wrong for good.
Removed
- Surf Crew. Retired months ago and now gone from the app. In practice almost every crew ever created stayed a crew of one: asking someone to invite a friend into an app about their cravings turned out to be asking them to disclose something private. If you were in one, the screen is gone and nothing else changes. Your history, streaks and notes were never stored in a crew record.
Fixed
- Onboarding could not be finished. Tapping past the category picker without choosing one left the final button permanently disabled. Anyone who hit this can now set up.
- The Journal could be dragged sideways off the edge of the screen.
- The Live Activity's countdown was clipped on the lock screen, rendering as "20:--".
- The mood logged after a surf showed a different face when reopened. The stored value never moved.
- Settings claimed there was no cloud. It syncs, privately, through your own iCloud. That is now what it says.
